Minocqua was officially organized in 1889.  Minocqua is an Ojibwe word meaning "noon day rest" and was given the name by the local Ojibwe Tribe.  Logging and fur trade was a big part of the area's beginnings.  When the railroad came to Minocqua it was for the timber but quickly changed to catering to sportsmen and tourists, helping the area become the vacation getaway haven it still is to this day.  With Minocqua being almost an island (there is only a small isthmus of land that prevents it from being an actual island), it should be no surprise that water is it's biggest asset.  There are over 2,300 rivers, streams and lakes in the Minocqua Area for you to enjoy including the Minocqua Chain that includes Minocqua Lake, Kawaguesaga Lake, Lake Tomahawk and Mid Lake.
