Spruce up your Outdoor Living Space for Fall!

by Adam Redman

Fall in the Chain of Lakes Area cannot be beat! Crisp cool air, fiery colors of leaves, peaceful waters, and cozy sweaters are some of our favorite things about this time of year. Although this season definitely means colder temperatures in Northern Wisconsin, you can still enjoy your outdoor living spaces throughout the season. Create a cozy fall oasis outside on your deck, dock, patio, terrace, or backyard. Spruce up your outdoor living space, grab a cup of hot apple cider, and admire the stunning seasonal changes.

Make your dock the perfect spot to relax. Enjoy the peace and quiet on your lake by making some simple updates to your dock for the season. Add some bright red adirondack chairs, a side table, lanterns, and throw for a spot to read or reflect. Consider covering your dock with an overhang so you can sit there regardless of the weather.

Create an outdoor living or dining room. Depending on your family's needs on your outdoor space, you could create a stunning outdoor room to significantly add to your living space. Set up an outdoor living room if you want another spot for your family to gather or add a long dining room table outside to host fun dinner parties outside. Choose furniture with cushions in neutral colors that can easily transition throughout the seasons. Focus on furniture made with dark woods and metal during the fall. Since you will be spending ample time in your new room, buy furniture that is just as comfortable as your interior decor. Add pieces such as daybeds, porter's chairs, swings, sectional couches, and chaise lounges for the perfect spots to kick up your feet. Place curtains along the exterior of your new outdoor room to help keep the area warmer.

Time to decorate. Whatever space you currently have or decide to create this fall, the easiest way to spruce it up is with some easy decorations. Replace summery textiles with oranges and reds. Add a throw to keep yourself warm on those brisk nights. Choose lighting that adds ambiance, such as hanging lanterns or a chandelier. Place an outdoor rug underneath your feet to keep them warm and cozy.

Add some heat. Beat the cold by adding an outdoor fireplace or firepit to your outdoor living space. Make smores with your family before bed time and have a romantic spot to unwind.

There's so much to do in the Minocqua area during these fabulous summer months!

One of the favorites is bird watching and hiking the beautiful nature trails of the northwoods.  If you're really adventurous consider renting a canoe or kayak and viewing the array of endangered birds in their natural habitats.  Whichever you choose... you won't be disappointed!  This is a great way for the family to bond and learn more about the wonderful nature surrounding the Minocqua area.

Destinations known for prized bird watching include:

North Lakeland Discovery Center- This is a featured site on the Great Wisconsin Birding and Nature Trail boasting diverse populations of migratory and nesting birds along with raptors and waterfowl.  Designed as a 25 kilometer, self-guided tour, trail system.

Rainbow Flowage- A 5000 acre habitat home to numerous species of birds;  Merlins, black-backed woodpeckers, gray jays, grouse, boreal chickadees, yellow bellied flycatchers, Canadian & palm warblers and Northern waterthrush. You may also be privy to bald eagles or osprey; which nest around the flowage.

Powell Marsh State Wildlife Area- 4,300 acres of trails with a 1,800-acre refuge located in the middle of the property. Birds here include great blue herons, marsh hawks, eagles, cranes, Northern harriers, sparrows, short-eared owls and black terns.

If hiking or biking through nature's paths is more your thing, check out the bevy of incredible local & state parks.  Some of our favorite include:

Bearskin State Trail- This park features an 18 mile railbed trail with numerous trestles and boardwalks.

Flambeau River State Forest- A 90,000 acre property along the Flambeau River.  Gorgeous trails and 75 miles of white water canoeing.

Hiawatha State Trail- Many different species of wildlife can be seen from this crushed stone, 6 mile trail, on the south side of Lake Nakomis.

Check out all the hiking trail possibilities here in the northwoods at this link: Minocqua Trails Guide
